Aliens in a Hostile World

Bible Text: John 17:11-23 | Preacher: Jim McCaslin | Series: Easter 2018

In this message the Rev. Canon Jim McCaslin confesses a recent fascination with Sci-fi movies, those that star both heroines and heroes, scientists and macho military leaders. Seldom, however, do the aliens get full shrift. Those of us who are Christians should identify most closely with these aliens. Scripture teaches that Christians are true aliens, not of this world, as documented in today’s Scripture known as Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer.

Abide and Provide

Bible Text: John 15:9-17 | Preacher: David Ball | Series: Easter 2018

Quoting such famous theologians as Winnie the Pooh and Huey Lewis and the News, Pastor David Ball focuses this message on love. The Greeks used four different words to distinguish different aspects of love, while we have only one word and it does not capture the complexity of love. Our culture sees Eros love as preeminent — romance to the point of obsession. This is a selfish love…what have you done for me… But the love attested to by Scripture is Agape love, sacrificial love. This world that loves romance desperately needs this transformational Agape love that comes from God.

Our Advocate, Counselor, and Helper

Preacher: David Ball | Series: Easter 2018

In this message, Pastor David Ball reminds us of C.S. Lewis’s description of the Church as a hospital for sinners. From a secular perspective those who are sick and hospitalized need advocates to ease their way through the mysteries of modern medicine. So also do Christians need help in navigating a world often hostile to their message and worldview. Ball turns our hearts toward John 14 where Jesus promises his disciples “another Helper to be with you forever.” The first advocate is Jesus himself. The second, the Holy Spirit.

The Worthy Shepherd

Bible Text: John 10:11-16 | Preacher: David Ball | Series: Easter 2018

In this message, Pastor David Ball helps us understand the good, and worthy Shepherd. And distinguish Him from the hired hand whom Jesus identifies in Scripture. The hired hand is in all things unworthy. But Sheep have to choose, they cannot survive on their own. Choosing the hired hand by putting first career, family, money and other things temporal leads to sorrow and loss. But only Jesus is our worthy Shepherd for the long haul.

Too Good NOT to Be True

Bible Text: Luke 24:36-49 | Preacher: David Ball | Series: Easter 2018

All too often we receive an offer that seems too good to be true, too many strings attached. This notion dates from the 1500s, when the plague filled decades and cruelly divided societies left men with no hope. But Pastor David Ball reminds us in this message that the cynicism of that phrase goes back much further — to Jesus. When He turned up after His resurrection, that seemed too good to be true. In time Jesus’ followers, understanding the facts as shared by Jesus, grasped that they too would rise again, recognizing the reality that these facts are too good NOT to be true.

Peace for All Times

Bible Text: John 20:19-31 | Preacher: David Ball | Series: Easter 2018

In this post-resurrection message, Pastor David Ball begins by pointing out the power of “3,” culturally — from the 3 Musketeers to the 3 parts of the judicial promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Even Jesus used the mysterious power of this way of making a point by promising his disciples three times after He had risen that he would give them peace — through wholeness, faith and its eternal reality. “And the peace of God abides still!”
